Outlook Pst Repair

In the event PST files become corrupted, there is a free tool available from Microsoft to correct the issue. While not all corrupted files are repairable, the Inbox Repair Tool (an integral part of Outlook) often repairs the most common issues.

The issue is generally caused by a discrepency with the PST file header. By repairing the header information and deleting language in the file itself that can not be recognized, most files can be regenerated. One of the most common causes of damage to a header occurs during program upgrades. If that is the root cause of the problem, the Inbox Repair Tool should correct the issue. However, if the data within the actual file is corrupted, the Inbox Repair Tool may permanently destroy everything in the file. For that reason, it is always recommended that a backup of the PST file prior to attempting any repair using the tool. When the Inbox Repair Tool prompts a backup, that option should be selected.

As noted above, it can not be stressed enough that a backup file should be created before any repair is attempted. In some cases, purchasing a third party program to repair the PST files. Free PST Repair Method

However, before purchasing any program, utilize the free version first to see if it will correct the issues being experienced with the PST files. The free built-in PST file repair tool is named scanpst.exe, and this utility will generally repair issues where only the header is corrupted. The Inbox Repair Toll can be found at C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033directory in any system that is running Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista. The tool filename is, as noted above, Scanpst.exe. If problems are encountered, use the search function to locate Scanpst.exe file. In some cases the 1033 directory will be slightly different, but the search should detect the file even if slightly different. If necessary, you can also download it from this site and place it in the above folder.

The PST file may be located in the following directories.

"Username" refers to the actual user account name used on your computer.
